General
In 1984 a Youth Learning Centre was established in Greymouth under the administrative control of the Nelson Polytechnic to provide ACCESS courses on the West Coast.
In 1987 the Youth Learning Centre was upgraded to a senior technical division (STD) of the Greymouth High School.
The Polytechnic was established in October 1989 following the Dempsey Report commissioned by the Hon. CR Marshall, Minister of Education, in 1985.
It opened in 1990, situated on several different sites in Greymouth (Greymouth High School, Harbour Board building, Transition Centre). During this year the Polytechnic was able to purchase Mawhera Incorporation leasehold land in Tainui Street (previously the Sisters of Mercy Convent and the old Butter Factory sites) and commence building on its present site. In January 1991 the administration staff moved into the building, and courses on the site commenced in February. The building was officially opened by Dr Lockwood Smith, Minister of Education, on 28 May 1991.
In 1995, the Polytechnic expanded into Auckland to offer niche-market programmes in Audio Engineering and Contemporary Music Performance.
After occupying a number of premises of varying suitability, the Audio Engineering programme moved into the Symonds Street Campus in 1996 and the Contemporary Music and Special Event programmes moved to the Manukau Campus in 1997. All Auckland programmes were relocated to Victoria Street in the CBD in a purpose, fitted-out facility for the start of the 2001 academic year.
The Polytechnic also has a ski campus in Wanaka which was stablished in 1995 at Twizel.
Currently the polytechnic has four main teaching faculties - West Coast, MAINZ (Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand), Industry Training and Business Development.
