Plagiarism

In an email that crossed my desk yesterday I learned that one unit in TPP is looking at using some specific Plagiarism detection software.  (Actually Turn it in: http://turnitin.com/)

The problem of plagiarism has different levels of significance for different types of classes.  I found a range of links on this topic, but this one in particular matches my opinions: http://sydney.edu.au/arts/teaching_learning/pg_writing_support/reducing_plagiarism.shtml

Just two points:

  1. Educating your students
  2. Devising assignments that are harder to plagiarise.  eg, you can make them context dependent (Apply this to the context of your own work, critique from your experience etc )  (These become more relevant to students and more fun to mark as well!!)

If you have been tutoring for a while I'm sure there are some horror stories to share.
